Man applying an at-home blood collection device to his upper arm

How Does At-Home Hormone Testing Work for Men?

At-home hormone testing lets you collect a small blood sample yourself, ship it to a certified lab and get your results without visiting a clinic. With the Vitality Test™, you use a nearly painless, FDA-cleared upper-arm collection device in the morning, ship it the same day with the prepaid label, and receive results plus a link to book a telemedicine consult within 5–7 business days of the lab receiving your sample.

What does an at-home hormone test measure?

The Vitality Test looks at six key male hormone biomarkers rather than testosterone alone:

  • Free testosterone
  • Total testosterone
  • Luteinizing hormone (LH)
  • Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG)
  • Estradiol
  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA)

Looking at the whole picture matters. Total testosterone can look “normal” while free testosterone is low, for example if SHBG is high. LH shows whether your brain is signaling your testes to produce testosterone. Learn more in our guides to SHBG and estradiol in men.

How is the blood sample collected?

The kit uses the FDA-cleared Tasso device, which collects blood from the upper arm (shoulder) instead of a fingertip or a vein in your elbow. Most people feel a quick, slight pinch, and some report feeling nothing at all. It then takes about 5–10 minutes for the tube to fill. Removing the device isn’t painful.

How do I prepare for the test?

A few simple steps help make sure your results are accurate:

  • Test first thing in the morning. Testosterone levels naturally vary through the day, so morning testing gives the most consistent reading.
  • Skip vigorous exercise the morning of your test.
  • Hydrate. Drink a big glass of water about an hour before. Dehydration slows blood flow into the tube.
  • No fasting needed. Food and drink are fine.
  • Consider PSA. Ejaculation likely doesn’t affect hormone levels but may affect PSA, so if you want the most accurate PSA reading, you may want to abstain the night before.

When and how do I ship it back?

Take and ship your test Monday through Thursday, and ship it the same day you collect it. The box includes a prepaid FedEx label with overnight shipping to the lab at no extra cost. Shipping early in the week helps keep your sample from sitting in transit over a weekend.

How long do results take?

Once the lab receives your sample, you’ll get your results and a link to schedule your telemedicine consult within 5–7 business days.

What happens after I get my results?

Your test includes a telemedicine consult with a men’s health clinician from our partner medical practice. They review your numbers, symptoms and medical history with you and explain what they mean. If it’s appropriate for you, the clinician may recommend the Reboot Program™, an approach designed to support your body’s own testosterone production rather than replace it. Any prescription decision is made by the clinician, not by Vitality Rx. The Reboot Program is optional, and there’s no further obligation after your included consult.

Is at-home testing as reliable as a lab visit?

Your sample is analyzed by a CLIA-certified laboratory, the same certification standard that applies to clinical labs. Accuracy depends on following the collection instructions, which is why the timing, hydration and shipping steps above matter. If something about your sample is off, your clinician can advise whether to retest.

Who should consider testing?

Men who notice low energy, low motivation, poor sleep, weight changes, slower recovery or low libido often want to know whether hormones play a role. Testing is also useful if you’re trying to conceive or weighing your options before starting TRT. Symptoms like these can have many causes, so talk to a clinician about your full health picture. Does insurance cover it?

Vitality Rx doesn’t accept insurance, but HSA and FSA cards are accepted. The test kit is available in all 50 U.S. states. See the FAQ for more details.

Can I test if I’m already on TRT?

Yes, but tell your clinician during your consult, since outside testosterone changes how your results should be interpreted, particularly LH and testosterone levels.
