DO TESTOSTERONE BOOSTERS REALLY WORK?

There are several herbs, amino acids, and similar products that can increase testosterone levels. One, D-AA, is an amino acid that is produced in testicular cells known as Leydig cells. It works to convert cholesterol into testosterone. When taken as a supplement, results are mixed. One study showed that users’ T increased by 42 percent after 12 days, but another study showed no changes in subjects who had engaged in resistance training. The training levels and base T levels of the subjects are speculated to be responsible for this difference, but no one is truly sure of the cause.
The herb fenugreek was studied under a different protocol. In that study, men engaged in resistance training for a period of eight weeks. Half were given fenugreek and half got a placebo. During the first four weeks, both groups gained significant strength. For the next four weeks, however, only the fenugreek group showed further strength increases. The fenugreek group also gained significant lean body mass as measured at both testing points. How much of a testosterone boost the fenugreek caused was unreported.
ZMA is another supplement of interest. Instead of being a single molecule, it is a combination of zinc monomethionine aspartate, magnesium aspartate, and vitamin B-6. Typically, this is found as an ingredient in other supplements rather than as a stand-alone product. Interestingly, this compound was tested in Division II football players instead of the general population. Those receiving the test supplement saw a 30% testosterone gain over the course of the study, while the corresponding placebo group lost 10% of their test.
It’s important to note that not all products sold as “testosterone boosters” actually deliver a boost. Therefore, would-be users should research to find out what, if any, science is behind a marketing claim. This will help prevent disappointment and increase safety.
Are Testosterone Boosters Safe?
It is impossible to give a blanket answer because there are so many different compounds that are used for this purpose. Some are sold specifically to raise T levels, while others are simply thought to have this effect due to popular culture and folk usage. Improving testosterone levels, in and of itself, is safe. The American Heart Association found that heart health is improved when men’s hormone levels are normalized. General health is believed to be improved as well.
Testosterone Booster Side Effects
As with most medicines and supplements, side effects are possible. Oily skin and acne, which naturally accompany the increase in testosterone that happens during the teen years, can return. Taking supplements for too long is hard on the kidneys and may cause problems. Prolonged use can also lead to elevated PSA levels or an overabundance of red blood cells. Too much testosterone leads to a quick temper and aggressive behavior, so it’s important to avoid taking too high of a supplement dose.
One surprising factor is that testosterone leads to an increase in muscle strength, but not necessarily a corresponding improvement in tendon and ligament durability. Therefore, it’s important to stick to a balanced workout regimen that doesn’t overtax the connective sinews.
